Grilled Fish Cake with Traditional Herbs

Fresh and succulent fish chunks in a beautiful marinade of herbs and spices grilled to perfection. Absolutely lip-smacking – you’ll have everyone reaching for another!

Cooking Time


  • 1kg ground king mackerel (ikan tenggiri) flesh

Pounded finely the following:

  • Ginger
  • Shallots
  • Garlic
  • Red chilies
  • Turmeric
  • Salt

Slice the following:

  • Lemongrass
  • Turmeric
  • Putat shoots (pucuk putat)
  • Winged beans
  • Stink beans
  • Water dropwort (daun ceylon)
  • Banana leaves and wild betel leaves


  1. Cut the banana leaves into squares, soften them then spread some oil on them.
  2. Place the wild betel leaves in the centre of the banana leaf.
  3. Top with the fillings.
  4. Wrap into the shape of kuih koci.
  5. Steam for 10 to 12 minutes.
  6. Serve and enjoy.
